Partridge Family, The - Season 1

Though not a huge hit while it was on the air, THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY has since come to epitomise many aspects of the early '70s. The show's portrayal of the excitement of a rock & roll lifestyle--however toned down--was quintessentially representative of its time. The family of six is headed by mom Shirley (Shirley Jones), a recently-widowed supermom who is short of financial resources. Jones' real-life stepson David Cassidy played teenaged stepson Keith, while the rest of the family was comprised of Laurie (Susan Dey), Danny (Danny Bonaduce), Chris (Jeremy Gelbwaks), and Tracy (Suzanne Crough). In the first episode, the family stumbles into making a hit song, gains a manager through Keith's diligence, and go on tour in an old painted schoolbus. Their first venue is in Las Vegas opening for Johnny Cash, and the family has to combat their stage fright. The season sees the family learning how to deal with their newfound fame, with Keith's heartthrob status getting the best of him and Danny considering a solo career. The group also plays at a feminist rally, has a nasty encounter with a family of skunks, and 10-year-old Danny gets drafted by accident. Other episodes include 'This is My Song', 'Mom Drops Out','Soul Club' and 'Not With My Sister, You Don't'.

ONE FLEW OVER THE PARTRIDGE'S NEST

C'MON GET HAPPY!!!! IT'S 'THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY'! They were fab, fun & funky. They're still fab, fun & funky. Remember how they were groovier than 'The Brady Bunch', cooler than 'Happy Days' & hipper than 'Bewitched'? Well, they're still groovier, cooler & hipper. Remember drooling over David Cassidy? Remember how cool Shirley Jones was for a Mom? Remember wondering how Susan Dey staightened her hair? Remember how Danny got his Fanta-coloured hair? Remember how Tracy couldn't play the tambourine? Remember how Chris couldn't drum? Remember singing along to their sweet bumble pop? And remember their groovy, psychedlic school bus. Remember all this & have a '70s flashback. Put on your favoruite flares, your tighest tank top & your rose-tinted sunnies. Sit back in your egg chair, kick off your platform sneakers, & gorge yourself on this feast of partridges without the pear tree. ENJOY!!!!

    A bird in the hand...

This brought back great memories from my youth, and Shirley Jones and Susan Dey are as pleasing on the eye as I remember. A fatherless family of 6 travelling the states in a multi-coloured bus playing concerts and making records? Only in the 70s! Great fun, though watching them in these cynical times the moral lesson of each episode is laughable, the miming is pretty poor, the choreography non-existant and the drummer can't drum. Still, all part of it's charm.
