an excellent drama with many sterling performances, not least the courtroom scene where Kirk Douglas as the honest Major takes on the corrupt hierarchy of the french army. The execution scene is amazingly dramatic and oppressive, even though the outcome is inevitable. the final scene where a frightened german girl is forced to sing a maudlin song to drunk and potentially agressive french troops is full of pathos as the troops are revealed to be much more human than the officer class who send them to their doom.
