Classic story of ithe madness and injsutices of the First World War unusallly seen fromi perspective of a group of French solidiers. The ruling Officer elite plan an offensive doomed to failure. Douglas, iin excellent forrm is the Colonel who finds hiis unit iis 'selected ' for the attcak and reluctantly agrees. He finds himself compromised between his duty as an officer and his love and responsibilty to his men. The inevitabele futile slaughter results in the search for scape goats and the court marshall of the innocent. The French settings and strong story line are matched by the clever use of black and white photography and strong acting all round. Short pithy and powerful it is a superb inditement of the class structure of WW!1. Although aging a little it still resonates today the type of politicing that is a part of war and the lot of the honourable solider
