There is always a lot of talk in a Rohmer film so if you are not fluent in French it can be a bit of a pain reading all these subtitles. Likewise if you find these characters uninteresting you may soon find your attention wandering. As a fan of Rohmer I always enjoy his examination of what motivates people to behave in the way that they do in matters of sex and the heart. So if you are a similarly fascinated 'people watcher' this little film rewards with insight and charm.

This film disgusts me greatly. All about men's pleasure and using woman for it. I feel truly sick watching this.

  • Nice typical French movie

Attractive setting and attractive bodies for a stagey, wordy piece that retains enough drama to sustain your interest as there are sufficient conflicts in the dialogues and of course it's good to look at. One for fans of French films mainly. Not a great film but a decent one - I don't think its characters have sufficient depth for it to be a great film but it is certainly good enough to immerse yourself in its meditations on human complexities and contradictions and our tendency to delude ourselves willingly and lack control over our natures. Clever insight that its the youngest characters who come out of it best because they are less tainted and twisted by experience.

  • Well worth watching

Surprisingly engrossing, despite the fact that not that much happens, mostly because it is fascinating to see people delude themselves. The three adults are pretty appalling - self centred, immoral, deluded, childish - and thus form an amusing contrast to the mature child, Pauline, who is the only one who behaves decently really. On a more random note, this would be a fantastic film for anyone wanting to improve their French as the dialogue is crystal clear. And Arielle Dombasle really does have a ridiculously perfect body (written as a heterosexual woman!).

A typical Rohmer film, where the characters endlessly discuss relationships & love in the same casual & knowing way as they would wine & cheese. But there is a plot of sorts (including a little sex & nudity); it's all very easy on the eye; & you won't miss much if you doze off during the conversations.

Consistently absorbing and fastidious but not pretentious conversations which are typically French but which are scorned by so many British viewers. And everything you see on screen looks natural. Nothing sensationalist or gimmicky or technically flashy. All the little details are intensely watchable despite being apparently commonplace. Rohmer is my favourite director.
