  • It's a good film...

    [Highly rated reviewer]

OK so you're never going to get a film anywhere near as good as the book in this case, I've read the book and is No.1 on my booklist (of about 2!!).

The film is actually satisfying in that it seems to have been given the Hollywood gloss yet has retained the anchor of a spiritual context. There are some parts of the film that made me giggle where Socrates responds to Dan's constant questioning, and other times that make me smile inside (with the wisdom being imparted).

I didn't think that Nick Nolte would suit the role of Socrates (not the image I had in my minds eye), but he doesn't manage to spoil it which is important - so well done Nick!

The film is farily slow but still keeps your attention throughout.

So, why the 5 stars? Well I think they should make more films like this with the powerful medium of movie making that they have. Highly Recommended!!

I have seen a good collection of inspiring, spiritual films, that really does help you contemplate on your own life, your lessons, your own spiritual learning, they way you think & more. This is one of those films which really does help you realise some key truths.. and really does inspire and help you after you have watched it... it is one of those films, which opens your heart & mind, it will make you cry, and it will make you laugh, its everything a film should be. The acting is great, and drama is great to, and it all knits together perfectly. If you need some inspiration in your life, some hope, some renewal, watch this film, because it holds simple messages which will hopefully inspire you.

  • Not bad, but could have been better

An enjoyable movie, though definitely not as good as the book. Socrates in the book comes across a less serious, more humorous character than the one in the film. Moreover, they've had to cut out many parts of the book in order to fit everything into 2 hours so the progression of events that you get in the book (esp. with respect to Dan's relationship with his teacher and the received training) feels slightly rushed in the film.

Nevertheless, the key lessons in the book are in the film and are presented in an insightful manner so by all means watch it. If you haven't read the book then you will probably like this even more than I did.

  • Very disappointing

I agree with the one that says it's like karate kid. And with all the other people that gave it 2 stars. If you read the book, you'll be probably disappointed too. They made so many chages and there are so many parts of the story missing... Socrates is always laughing and happy in the book, in the film he looks always serious and concern. I understand they have to make changes and skip things to adapt a book to a film, but there are changes that look ridiculous. The film looked pretty stupid for me at the end.

I wouldn't bother in watching it

  • Loved it!

Although I still have the book on my bookshelf waiting to be read I loved the film. It was so much better than I was expecting especially after my disappointment with the Conversations with God film but this left me tingling. Can't wait to read the book!
