Like Tim Burton's EDWARD SCISSORHANDS and the TV show PUSHING DAISIES, PENELOPE is a modern fairy tale, complete with candy colours and whimsical cinematography. PENELOPE begins with a generations-old curse by a jilted lover: the next girl in the aristocratic Wilhern family will be born with a pig's snout and ears. Though ages .. Read more

Plenty of twists and an extremely snappy script
Charming, low-key fable with sly modern twists
This film is superb. my daughters loved it. Generations ago, a witch placed a curse on the Wilhern family that would result in the next girl being born into the clan having a Pig snout -- and now young Penelope (played by Christina Ricci) has fallen victim to the vengeful hag's unsightly grudge.
When newspaper reporter Lemon (played by Peter Dinklage) runs a misleadingly frightening photograph of the kind-hearted Penelope, her parents, Jessica (played by Catherine O'Hara) and Franklin (played by Richard E. Grant), lock the girl away in a sprawling mansion.
Though it is said that the curse can be lifted if a man of Penelope's status takes her hand in marriage, every man who lays eyes on the girl takes flight at first sight, never to return -- until the arrival of Max (played by James McAvoy), that is.
An unrepentant gambler with a heavy heart and an ulterior motive for meeting Penelope, Max is unexpectedly caught off guard by the pig-nosed girl's disarming charm, and suddenly flees before having carried out his plan.
Now determined to throw caution to the wind, and explore the world on her own terms, Penelope makes the acquaintance of independent-minded delivery girl Annie (played by Reese Witherspoon), who quickly agrees to join her newfound friend on the ultimate journey of self-discovery.
well worth renting out.
This is a charming family movie with a good cast and a fairytale ending ..... I would highly recommend this one for young girls ..... Can other reviewers please stop giving the storyline away or add a spoiler as it is nice just to watch a film that you know nothing about....
A full film outing for writer by Leslie Caveny who wrote and co-produced the tv series Everybody Loves Raymond, this is quite brilliant. Born to a well to do family thats past has just caught up with it. Penelope has been born with the nose of a pig originating from a curse an old witch cast generations ago. Hidden away from the public, it is apparent that the only way the curse can be lifted is through the love of some fellow blue blooded suitor, born with a silver spoon. Could the arrival of Max (James Mcavoy) save the bacon ? Or will the attentions of a tabloid hack, intent on a top pay day by publishing pictures of the girl-pig, ruin the whole thing. There are other neat twists and fun asides in what is a really lovely fun fantasy fable that can't fail to entertain. Definately worth a watch.
good film to watch with your kids it's funny with a good story line (girly film really)
This film was OK, James MacAvoy was loveable as always. The story started off quite well but then it just sort of fizzled out. Wasn't really sure why Reese Witherspoon was in the film but then in the credits she was named as the producer so that made it clearer!! It was entertaining enough. If you are an old romantic then you won't be disappointed.

ok the plot mite sound a little odd but after seeing the trailer i thought i'd give it a shot. the acting from james mcavoy & christina ricci is excellant and their friendship then love for each other is as good as any other worth while film
the only bad points i have about this are 1] reese witherspoon cud have been used better & more often as when she was her acting lightened up the story & 2] the ending was rushed abit
great film though. rent it! :]
I thought she looked better with the pig nose!
Not a very interesting film and no real story so I wouldn't bother
I enjoyed the movie, but I think kids would enjoy it a whole lot more than adults. The subject matter is about accepting one self and self esteem, concepts of what is beautiful or ugly, normal or abnormal. Altogether trying to be deeper and more profound than it actually was. It had the happily ever after, fairy tale feel to it and for that reason it's best suited and enjoyed by kids.
This film has an interesting subject, and even though it was a bit fantastical I still thought it sounded worth a watch. Unfortunately, this film really didn't work. A good cast was made to look foolish, in fact James McEvoy actually had the grace to look ashamed a few times.
Also, where on earth was it supposed to be set????
The Americans sounded British, the Brits sounded bizarre.
Far to much work for me I'm afraid. If I'd wanted to struggle with a storyline I'd have watched the Coen Bros. At least that would have been worth it in the end!
Well i thoroughly enjoyed this little cracker. A fantastical tale with an all star cast I just wasn't prepared for (so kept pointing and saying 'oh look it's thingy from thingy').
The script was top notch , loads of quite funny laugh out loud bits.
Don't be put off by the U cert as it really is a little gem.
The story wasn't very interesting and acting was alright but I still enjoyed it.
watch once and no urge to watch again, story line has a lot of truth but did not really enjoy.
