A Neglected Classic
By Leon Collins from London , 03 Nov 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
The film was ignored when released in 1951 but has gradually attained cult status. Unusually for a romantic comedy the first few minutes concern an unwed Jeanne Crain attempting suicide when she learns from doctor Cary Grant that she is pregnant. Grant plays the brilliant, yet unauthodox Dr Noah Praetorius who is hounded by the jealous Professor Rodney Elwell (Hume Cronyn)who hopes to find a dark secret in his past. The secret involves Praetorius's mysterious companion Mr. Shunderson brilliantly played by Finlay Currie. The film is a wry commentary on sexual mores of the 50s and the McCarthyite persecution of non
conformists.Recommended.- Was this review helpful to you?

(5)A bit of froth
By LEM (23 reviews) from Edinburgh , 01 Nov 2011Look any Cary Grant and I'm sold so bring them on and I'll watch them, then forget them and watch them again and enjoy them all over again.- Was this review helpful to you?

Dissapointing
By Paul Evans from Hampshire , 18 Sep 2007I confess that after 30 minutes of struggling through this movie we decided to fast forward, scene by scene and ended up not really watching anymore.
Cary Crant looks extremely uncomfortable and bored as the target of his students affections and frankly we were equally emotionally unattached!
I chose the film as it was on my Love Film Recommended list but I would advise that you give it a miss.- Was this review helpful to you?

Utterly dissapointing
By gilesh (108 reviews) from portesham , 25 Sep 2006This promised so much and i felt let down in every respect. It was like watching a bad play that had been badly rewritten for the screen. Why did any of the characters do what they did? There was no explanation or reason behind any of it espescially Dr Elroy who seemed hell bent on destroying Cary Grant for doing absolutely nothing! Except being handsome and conducting the orchestra. Also how could Cary Grant fall in love with her! A fickle bimbo slut who falls in love in seconds and marries at the drop of a hat.
Who cares anyway everyone else seems to love it but i would never watch it again- Was this review helpful to you?

Odd...
By a customer from Guildford, Surrey , 10 Jan 2006This is quite an atypical Cary Grant film. But it is interesting, if somewhat strange, especially the final revelation. At times it felt like it was trying to inject humour, but wasn't sure whether it should or not - probably shouldn't have tried, I think. But worth a look, particularly if you're a Cary fan.- Was this review helpful to you?
