My favourite Almodovar movie of all time and the very first He produced in his carreer.
It was produced during the years of the Madrid 'Movida' which followed the death of the Dictator Franco, with a budget of just 20k, mainly raised amongst friends of Almodovar, who was then an employee of Telefonica.
The result is witty, enjoyable, weird and excessive at times.
'Pepi Luci Bom portrays like no other movie from that period the weird, caothic, vibrant, creative and limitless scene of a Madrid that suddenly went back to life after fourty years of extreme dictatorship. An explosion of cultural renaissance and partying that produced some of the most renowned creative talents in Spain.
Almodovar is certainly the most distinguished son of those years.
The movie also stars as a main actress Alaska ('Bom' in the movie), the famous Punk singer of the Movida's years, and several scenes were shot in her house.
Don't be put-off by the bad reviews on this site. If you want to understand Pedro Almodovar you'll have to start from this movie.
