An insanely violent, amoral black comedy thriller, inspired by the books of Barry Gifford, who also provided the source material for David Lynch's Wild at Heart (trivia nuts will know that Perdita Durango was the name of the Isabella Rossellini character in Lynch's version). Here she is flamboyantly played by Rosie Perez in a tale that finds her teaming up with black magic cult leader Javier Bardem (Live Flesh) to kidnap a couple of young lovers for human sacrifice, then moving on to smuggle a cargo of human foetuses to Las Vegas. As he did in Acción Mutante, director Alex de la Iglesia sets out to offend just about everybody and succeeds, but this mix of Latin craziness and mind-blowing ultra-violence is still utterly compulsive viewing.

    • Radio Times
  • Energetic, sex-obsessed thriller that would have benefited by being much shorter; it falls short of the mythic status it aims for.

A scientist? No, you're definitely a dentist. I could tell from the stupid smile on your face

A volatile mix of brutal violence, excessive characterisation and rough sex, Alex de la Igelsia’s comic/novel adaptation is a great piece of action cinema. The sharp script is complemented by a strong performance from Bardem who plays the voodoo-loving psychopath Romeo Dolorosa and lover of Latin wildcat Perdita (Perez). The wonderfully eccentric plot involves the kidnapping of a virginal young couple, explosive gunfights and a plan to smuggle foetuses across the US/Mexico border! The black humour and trashy dialogue may put off some viewers but if you enjoy the twisted mentality of directors like Tarantino then this is worth your time. A word of warning though – this R2 version is cut and full screen. The US R1 version carries the correct aspect ratio but is also cut. If you want to watch it in its full, bloody glory you need to pick up the R2 German version, which is both uncut and has the correct aspect ratio. 3.5/5 (I’ve rated the German version here).
