  • Horror at its absolute best

    [Highly rated reviewer]

I can’t really say I “loved” this film – but I have to give it five stars anyway because it is one of the most chilling films I have ever seen. Forget the Hollywood CGI-fests of aliens, vampires or natural catastrophes. This is a simple, shocking, psychological drama of the very best kind – the kind that plays with your mind and lets you fill in all the details yourself.

It starts very quietly and very simply on a normal day in Glasgow with normal people going about their everyday lives. And then the entire world starts to fall apart. The tension becomes almost unbearable as two normal people start a relationship as the meltdown gradually starts to take hold and mount up. I actually found it quite distressing to watch in certain places – the scene in the restaurant where people are hit by a sudden, all-encompassing urge to eat in particular. And you start to think “What would I do in this kind of situation?”

Two aspects of the film need addressing. The first is that a lot of the dialogue is pitched very low in the soundtrack and you may have to turn on the subtitles to pick up on quite a lot of it. The second is that, for reasons which become apparent as the film progresses, there has to be an objective narrator’s voice. Unfortunately, the early examples of this are irritatingly like those slightly-over-jolly adverts for private healthcare and some people may well be put off by them. But stick with it – this is the most horrifying and scary film you will see this year. And it was made on a shoestring, deserves to be seen by everyone who appreciates the art of film and doesn’t have a single second of CGI. The horror is all in your mind – which is where the best horror comes from.

  • Chilling thriller that does not pull its punches

Much darker and starker than Contagion this is a chilling thriller with great performances from McGregor and Green and a great British supporting cast. Could have shaved ten minutes of the length of the film as it was a bit slow in places.

  • Slow but very good, stick with it

I nearly gave up on this one - many have said on here it is slow and a little dull... but stick with it because it does ultimately pick up. The most helpful review calls it a horror film - no, it is not a horror film. It is a romantic drama with a slight sci-fi twist to it. It is a film which thoughtfully explores the senses and how much we take for granted in our world and how we have lost touch with the things most important to us. The film is not one to watch if you want cheering up as it is very downbeat with an almost melancholy feel to it. Moments of joy and elation are quickly dashed. It is very well written, acted and directed. All that said... I am still not 100% sure I actually enjoyed it very much although it is a good film. Stick with it and don't let the slow pace put you off.

Absolutely awful. The film didn't hang together and the story didn't make sense. The start was really slow and the ending - well I can't even remember it, I thought there was going to be a twist that would have made it worthwhile, but there wasn't.

  • Good Film - just switch the 'subtitles' On !!!

I probably disagree with most renters and reviewers ... but i found this film very tense and scary. It does start slowly but that just adds to the fore-boding atmosphere of what will happen next, as the world succumbs to an unexplainable epidemic. The focus is on the lives of the two main characters, which slowly and uncontrollably unravel, it is very touching and scary to imagine the gradual loss of the humans primary senses and the ending leaves you with a thought of what would it be like? A very under-rated film but i definately think worth a watch. *a tip* the dialogue sound is very low and hard to hear as many reviewers are right to mention, but put the subtitles on and you won't be dissappointed in this little gem of a film.
