"...A superlative blend of story theme and character, acted by an imcomparable cast..."
"...Intelligent and moving, full of rich stories, sudden sex and sinister secrecy..."
"...Stephen Poliakoff's sumptuous drama...is vividly and beautifully told..."
I really don't know how to express our total enjoyment of this film - the acting, filming, settings - everything was superb. We watched both discs, one after the other when we really ought to have been doing other things, so engrossed were we. A total treat!
Enthralling drama with an all star cast. 'Perfect Strangers' tells the story of a grand family reunion at a posh hotel. Although the main character does not know most of the other guests, he gradually uncovers harrowing past histories of the most unlikely seeming relatives.
I rented these dvds because of reviews I saw on amazon.co.uk, look there for more intellectual critiques. However, you don't need to be intellectual to thoroughly enjoy this drama.

the rubbish that is currently served up as entertainment and proof of the excellence which can be achieved when not chasing box office ratings.
Whilst carrying some of the big names in UK drama, it piqued my interest. After watching the first disc, Im unsure if the stories are linked and how the character of Steven and the 3 old ladies are related given the differing accounts of their experiences.
The scene setting and actiong from Timothy Spall (who I'm not generally a fan of) and Michael Gmabon aswell as a surprise from Matthew MacFadyan is great.
The pace is like many British dramas, jumpy but to some extent this subject and even the stories demand a slow build up rather than the headier mix of pace and action. I am yet to watch the second part but needless to say, I am looking forward to how it all comes together.
I would recommend this to anyone who is not off put by a story based drama, rather than action and who can appreciate things are not always as they may first appear.
Yet another masterpiece from the pen of Stephen Poliakoff, this production is certainly on a par with 'Shooting the Past' and 'The Lost Prince' and therefore well worth watching.
Not only does the plot have a group of themes that would strike a chord with most people, the stories are intertwined to present a tapestry of the history of a family and its component members. As is usual with Poliakoff, there is the setting the scene to establish the various relationships between the characters, combined with some tempting information and tit-bits, which in some cases only becomes relevant to the audience well into the final episode.
Like a Magician, gradually performing his tricks, the author/ director builds up to the final reveal which establishes the relevance of all the other cameos. It is similar to watching Sherlock Holmes explain one of Moriartys schemes to a baffled Inspector Lestrade and a bemused Doctor Watson.
With a cast that included Michael Gambon, Lindsay Duncan, Matthew Macfadyen, Claire Skinner, Toby Stephens and Timothy Spall this three part tale was all set to win its fair share of Baftas (Five out of Nine nominations). What also made this an excellent cast was the quality of the secondary roles which made the whole story so believable. It was particularly heart-warming to see veteran sirens Kathleen Byron, Muriel Pavlow and Sheila Burrell as the elderly sisters, all of these beauties broke hearts in the 50s & 60s and their performances glistened like diamonds in the sunshine.
This was classic BBC Television Drama at its best, which makes paying the Licence worthwhile, unlike some of the reality rubbish, property prattle and culinary chat that passes for entertainment.
Was this worth the cost of a rental? Of course it was! It was even worth the wait for the second disc.

This is a bit of a whodunnit but without a murder - or maybe it's a whodunwot. Anyone who's been to a family reunion and found that they only know a handful of people will connect with this. It's very well casted and acted and believable. The major premise is that, if you dig enough, every family has at least 3 great stories. I found it very enjoyable.
This is my favourite of all Poliakoff's work. The story gently reveals itself to be a quietly profound statement about family and how patterns develop through generations. The performances are supberb, I love the way Poliakoff has modest middleclass characters discovering another world of country mansions and Kensington townhouse living. I watched the whole thing in one go and loved every minute.
What a fantastic cast, what a pity they were given so little to do. In a word, pretentious
I actually got this DVD because I wanted to watch all three episodes as I had originally missed the last episode when it was shown on BBC television.
I have now found out 'Whodunnit' and am a very happy old Hector.

Gripping drama with an all star cast. Tells the story of a grand family reunion at a posh hotel. The main character doesn't know any of his new-found relatives upon his arrival but during the course of the weekend discovers some surprising and harrowing past histories which would never be suspected from appearances.
Recommended for anyone who wants to watch something a bit more challenging than most of the rubbish currently being served up by TV as entertainment.
We weren't too impressed with Perfect Strangers. It starts off quite promising with a large family get together. Some of the family have never met and others haven't met in years, so if anyone has ever been in this situation they might like the intrigue but we found the plot a bit slow to unravel.
