John Travolta stars as a Rolling Stone reporter who travels to Los Angeles to investigate a drug case and decides to write an expose of the health-club craze of the 1980s. Reporter Adam Lawrence (Travolta) sets out to trash the fitness craze as just a replacement of the shallow singles bar scene of the 1970s. He even has a title in mind: "Looking for Mr. Goodbody." As he researches his story, Adam meets Jessie (Jamie Lee Curtis), a sexy fitness instructor who has little use for scribes like him. Adam charms the reluctant Jessie, and before long the hot couple is working out together--in more ways than one. Suddenly Adam is faced with a quintessential dilemma of journalism: Can he be Jessie's lover and still ridicule her friends and workplace

Writing an exposé of the Californian fitness industry to keep busy while chasing a drug story, Rolling Stone reporter John Travolta falls in love with Jamie Lee Curtis, the aerobics guru whose club he intends to destroy in his feature. Director James Bridges's air-head film is one of the prime reasons Travolta fell out of favour before his Pulp Fiction rediscovery. Yet both he and Curtis look fabulous in their work-out sequences — of which there are far too many, mind you — and their appealing chemistry does get the now very dated premise over the rough patches and into shape.

    Entertaining

I had watched this film when it was originally released. I enjoyed it then and on second viewing.

This film should not be dismissed as a showcase for the physical attractiveness of its stars, Jamie Lee Curtis and John Travolta, even though this is basically how it was marketed (the trailer included on the DVD is quite blantant!). The recent Eric Prydz, Call on me video is basically a spoof of one of the aerobics scenes. Nevertheless, the fitness class scenes, although obviously rather dated, are impressive and Curtis must have worked extraordinarily hard to be convincing as an aerobics guru.

This film came in a down period in Travolta's career, but he displays all his usual ability and carisma. Both he and Curtis are very convincing in their roles.

The film also deals with issues such as body image and integrity of journalists, providing a reasonable plot to back up the romantic stroyline between its main stars.

I would recommend watching this film, particularly if you've ever been to a health club.

    John Travolta: Staying Alive

    • 16 Jul 2007

The kid looks like he can't believe it, and at the same time, like he knows he's the shit; there's no-one can touch him. He's 22, with long, wavy 1976 hair and an ear-to-ear grin, and he's telling the man with the microphone about his first lead role in a feature film, which will be out next year. 'It's called Saturday Night Fever, and it's gonna be HOT!' he simpers. John Travolta hasn't made a musical in a quarter of a century. If Hollywood is ever held to account for its errors of omission,... Read more
