When this first came out the impression was a bit of ' oh look at clever us'. With all those Footlights people and Emma Thompsons mum, who needs a casting agent? But watch again, back through the time tunnel of a some incredible careers on the back of tremendous achievements and you see the film for what it is, perhaps what it always was; a cast of immense talent filming a script of amazing quality.
The movie accurately portrays what life long friendships are like in your 30's. People have moved at different rates. Lives have other priorities. You don't always understand where people have ended up or why. And yet... and yet underneath all that change so much remains the same.
Well directed, brilliantly acted, wickedly funny, desperately sad - and all on one DVD.
