  • Good music

    [Highly rated reviewer]

The music is good and the sound is excellent. However, the animators' story is quite gloomy and dolls are among ugliest possible so that abstract background could be a good alternative. Not really a children story. A good thing that it lasts for only 30 minutes although the original simphony was probably longer. Summary: Good music spoiled by Polish animators.

  • Delightful Concept

Delightful concept superbly brought to the screen. The puppets are excellent and the story very well executed. The twist in the story at the end will probably contradict all the previous times you may have heard or watched this story played out - possibly as a ballet

A delightful film; a treasure both visual and aural. It is so moody, so light and so exotic you believe it must have been made by Russians in Russia.

Great imagery but a little scarey for young children. Slightly disappointing ending. Classic music! Enjoyed the extra section where the orchestral instruments are introduced.

  • No words - interesting

    Rated - 4.0 stars

Although the music is all there, and pretty familiar, there is no corresponding set of words. Interesting - it isn't too much of a loss - one is thrown back on one's own appreciation of what is going on.

The usual cast - the cat is not quite what I expected (but then, what cat ever corresponds to preconceptions?); and perhaps Grandfather is a blacker figure than 'usual'. The least airworthy bird I have seen in some time, although it works out appropriately (of course). And the duck goes the way of all flesh.

Not quite the traditionally specified ending, and no worse for that. Perhaps the whole is more noir than the original: but, hooray! Disney it ain't. (I like the Disney, but ...) Well worth the viewing; and more than once, too, I'd guess.
