Fine film, poor quality disc.
By Ian Davies from South Wales , 01 Apr 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
This is quite a good martial arts/horror hybrid with some excellent fight sequences from start to finish. Chang Yi is one of those regular faces in the genre who often plays the villian, and in this film he does not disappoint with a 'Palm of Death' technique that has to be seen to be believed. Haunted quite literally by one of his victims, Chang Yi is suitably evil and troubled by the Phanton Kung Fu of the title. The supernatural elements are not overplayed, and overall this is classical kung fu at its best.
Now for the downside. The enjoyment is slightly marred by the poor quality of the disc itself. It is not in widescreen so the action is a little cut out at the edges and muted, but worse still is the picture and sound quality. This disc has not been put together with the T.L.C. of one of, say, the Hong Kong Legends or Eastern Heroes releases. I can put up with so much, but this film deserves a better release. This film loses one star rating because of that.
Don't be put off by the poor picture and sound, this is still worth a watch. Just don't expect real digital quality.- Was this review helpful to you?
