The Ugly Bug Ball

Dario Argento's golden period were his three supernatural horrors - 'Deep Red', 'Suspiria' and 'Inferno'. 'Phenomena', a Swiss-set suspenser, is a long way behind them. Even if 'Phenomena' makes more sense than the version released on video as 'Creepers', it still feels like six movies spliced randomly together. And none of them is that good.
The plot wants to hark back to 'Suspiria', as an American girl at an unsympathetic girls' school discovers a psychic link to insects. A mad killer is chopping up girls, so the girl and spooky insect genius Donald Pleasance is investigating the murders with the help of his super-intelligent chimp housemate. It feels like they're making it up as they go.
Because Argento doesn't seem to know whether the insect story or the lunatic murderer should be the focus, he just swings randomly from one to the other, involving a lot of awkward mood changes. When finally, our heroine is kidnapped, things seem to settle into standard thriller territory, except for the fact that Argento has four or five different climaxes up his sleeve, involving every last loose end of his story. It's not bad (some sequences work very well), but it's so demented, the effect is ultimately maddening rather than terrifying.- Was this review helpful to you?

lots of lava

Disappointing film

Ok I cannot say that this film was brillant because it was not. Maybe if the annoying music which drove me crazy throughout the film was removed or the volume of the music toned down and the story just got to the point rather than weaving in and out of I do not know what, I would have given this film just a slightly higher rating So I am sorry to say I was disappointed, I was so hoping this film would have been much better- Was this review helpful to you?

Vintage Argento

Great soundtrack from Maiden, Motorhead and Andi Sex Gang (of Sex Gang Children fame- gawd I'm old!) too. Definitely worth a watch. ;)- Was this review helpful to you?

Jennifer Connelly + Mr Argento Rock!

Jennifer Connelly is just 15 when she stars in this film. 15 and has the starring role! Fans of JC, don't miss it - it's good fun and is better than any teen horror on offer today. Purist fans of Argento may dis' it but to me, it was entertaining from the beginning and I couldn't help but stare at the ever beautiful JC. She was quite good considering her age and that she was the central character. Donald P. was good as well and he didn't lay on the accent as another reviewer suggested when they compared him to Billy Connely, accent wise.
