Whatever you think of this film Tom Hanks does an outstanding job as the lawyer with AIDS who sues his firm when they fire him. For its time it was groundbreaking. I have to wonder how far we've come when current projects like Ang Lee's 'Brokeback Mountain' still shy from showing real onscreen intimacy between two men. Denzel Washington's everyman character almost steals the show from Hanks. Their relationship is one of the movie's highlights, given that it downplays that between Hanks and his beautiful lover, played by Antonio Banderas, who hovers in the background offering love and support. I suppose the filmmakers ought to be commended for not just preaching to the converted but trying to confront homophobia. It is ironic that a film about prejudice and discrimination against a gay man is afraid to deal with what that means, as though a sexually active gay man is somehow less deserving of our sympathy than a saintly victim. I was undeniably moved, and it is a very good film. However I suggest you rent 'Parting Glances' with Steve Buscemi to see a real gay man with AIDS, or get hold of 'Longtime Companion' which is a more honest film.

I really liked this film. Tom Hanks is super but Densel Washington was well OTT. I just watched Limitless and so that has made me appreciate this film more

A well acted and moving story, highlighting the issues of bias and discrimination in a way that has not dated in the slightest. Also a very good courtroom drama.

    A must see.

If the review title flashed the correlating thought to the Gay community, then I guess you have a ways to go to get rid of archane attitudes, but the fact that you still read this, shows all is not lost :)

Superb film that amply illustrates the deeps of depravity and revulsion that so called 'ordinary god fearing' folk can descend into in their quest for self justification and persecution of Gay individuals. The bigoted treatment handed out by the anti-gay movement - religious inspired ot not - is one of the shameful blots on Mankinds changeable fickle charactor. Maybe one day we will grow up and put self seeking pomposity to one side rejecting ego based morals, but it will not be any time soon regrettably.

Tom Hanks and Denzil Washington deliver powerful and moving performances, that will pull up short even the most dire bigot. Regretably that genre of individual never watches this kind of film anyway, much less get this far in reading a review, its the whole 'See no evil, Hear no evil, Speak no evil' thing. I do think the film drew out the contrast between the out and out bigot, and those who come to a realisation that past attitudes were disgracefully wrong.

Little else can be said without superfluous hyperbole. The film leaves the thinking person with a deep sense of forboding that for all our progress as a Species, we still have not truely learnt the meaning of the word compassion, the ego self-seeking based definition doesnt cut it. Thats real, real sad.

Unmissable movie, impeccable performances in the Lead Roles, in particular Tom Hanks. Dont miss it ......

A film with a straightforward mission that succeeds in telling its story effectively whilst winning audience empathy immediately thanks to a strong ensemble cast and Demme's confident direction.

To some extent it is a bit overly simplified, but, nevertheless, it's hard not to get involved and shed a few tears. A strong, solid drama.
