    [Highly rated reviewer]

A great looking claustrophobic b-movie with the gaunt Widmark compressing layers of, at turns, aggression, passion and menace in this tale of stolen film. Thelma Ritter almost steals the show in a supporting role, but the plot sometimes stutters and eventually tails off so abruptly that you feel it could have had another half hour to go.

Great '50s noir given a surprisingly violent edge thanks to director Samuel Fuller, this is a no-nonsense thriller set in NYC at the time of the commie 'Red Scare'. Thelma Ritter in particular is superb as the police informant, her final scene before her death is outstanding work.

Not sure why I rented this. Somewhat dated (but I was expecting that) and the acting was so over-the-top it was cringe-worthy. One to avoid I'd say.

a pickpocket finds himself caught between the law and international espionage when he steals the wrong girls purse. Is the girl showing genuine affection for him or is it just a means to an end ? Very enjoyable.

I loved watching old films when I was much younger, especially any with Richard Widmark. He still has that old charisma :-) Yes, movie making techniques have changed drastically but this film survives beautifully, that's what happens with great actors. Widmark shows us menace, passion & comedy - effortlessly. Oh those eyes!!

  • Thank goodness for Thelma Ritter

Richard Widmark has always seemed to me to lack real star quality. He is certainly no luminary of the silver screen. But he makes the most here of a rather restrictive role, set in New York (including his rabbit hutch of a home somewhere on a decayed Lower East Side quay). And the story eventually allows him to blossom a bit.

But the real pleasure for me in this Samuel Fuller movie is the scope Fuller gives to Thelma Ritter to enjoy herself, in the part of Bowery denizen 'Moe'. It is good to have such a great character actor being given a high billing in the cast list.
