Already in my top 3 of 2004!By Matthew Sludds from East Anglia , 13 Jul 2004
[Highly rated reviewer]It?s Thanksgiving and April Burns has invited her family to her New York apartment for dinner. As the eldest, and most alienated of three children this is a real chance for April to make a much needed good impression on her family.
If only it were this simple. Dinner is proving slightly more difficult than she anticipated, mainly due to the oven not working. Her boyfriend Bobby has been out for most of the day and she needs to recruit the help of her neighbours to get the turkey cooked.
Her efforts might be short-lived however, as her family are travelling from Pennsylvania somewhat reluctantly. Joy, her Mother deals with recurrent bouts of nausea brought on by her cancer chemotherapy and finds occasional relief from her Son?s cannabis supply.
Peter Hedges has developed an excellent script into a simple but effective film that had me laughing out loud one minute before placing a lump in my throat the next. The dialogue is witty and amusing from start to finish and the film never gets too heavy whilst dealing with some tough issues. The perfect answer to a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Touching dramaBy a customer from Scotland , 28 Jan 2007I found this film to be really quite touching. It was well acted and offers a realistic and at times amusing portrayal of a messed up family.
Great little filmBy a customer from Sheffield, Yorkshire , 24 Nov 2006This is a film with no big ego or arrogance. A strong cast with a great script and an excellent director all lead this New York Indie film to being well worth watching.
Touching and engaging, if you like character driven stories and strong acting (think lost in translation) then this is for you.
Its not fast paced nor is it an award winning film. What it is , and this is becoming rare in Hollywood, is a well made film worthy of praise without any pretensions.
Pieces of AprilBy Kela23 (636 reviews) from Wickford, Essex , 20 Sep 2006Having read the reviews I had a fair idea what to expect. I think Katie Holmes is an awesome actress and she again proved herself, I went through all the emotions she did. Was hilarious watching her running up and down her appartment block trying to find an oven she could use. Very strong cast, would recommend this film.
what a load of toshBy a customer from Sheffield, England , 14 Aug 2006Never even reached the end of this, was in danger of falling asleep long before! Its a shame as I usually enjoy Katie Holmes, such as in Go, but this drivel waffled on, jumping about all over the place and never making sense.
True life drama and confusion!By MrG (450 reviews) from Hadley, Telford , 11 Aug 2006This is one of those films, you can actually see playing out in real life. The story follows the opinions and actions of a young couple, setting out on their own, and ending with a warm felt family reconcilation. Having not known much about the film prior to watching, i was surprisingly impressed afterwards.
