Fascinating Boulez
By Matthew Pollard from Brighton, UK , 09 Dec 2006[Highly rated reviewer]
Very interesting and analytical, but not electrifying in rehearsal, as you might expect. Berg's '3 Orchestral Pieces' was revealed as partly an exercise in intricate balance. Boulez's 'Notations 1-4' came across as a more vibrant and appealing work. For Boulez fans this is a 'must-see', and many conductors and composers will find much of interest in this. Others may find it a little pointless but I loved it.- Was this review helpful to you?

(3)awesome orchestra; dull rehearsal
By a customer from London, UK , 31 Jan 2007Boulez rehearses in German, so don't expect to find the rehearsal process to exciting. When interviewed, he talks in English.- Was this review helpful to you?

Missed Oportunity
By a customer from Huddersfield. England , 22 Jan 2007This is rather disappointing. The orchestra and Boulez are rehearsing 2 pieces they know well. and it all comes over more as a run through. His exacting standards come across in a few places and maybe for a budding conductor it might be helpful. The real disappointment with this is that much of the rehearsal is missing and yet we get no complete performance of the pieces. In the commentary Boulez tells us that he third piece is the most interesting. Guess what: The director decides it is too difficult for us, so we only get a perfunctory look at it. So you end up feeling very short changed. I have been to Boulez rehearsals and come away with profound insights to the nature of music - This is not such an occasion!- Was this review helpful to you?
