This romantic comedy was the first and most entertaining of the series of films Doris Day made for Universal Studios that gave the singing star a career lift and successfully teamed her with the likes of Cary Grant, James Garner and her most popular partner, Rock Hudson. It's ultra-glossy froth, and the smart plot about Day and Hudson sharing a telephone party line won an Oscar for best story and screenplay. Hudson displays a flair for adroit humour, but the funniest material goes to Tony Randall (never better) and the acerbic Thelma Ritter, and both shine through the heavily piled-on glamour (the hallmark of co-producer Ross Hunter). Director Michael Gordon's use of CinemaScope is exemplary.
Slightly elephantine romantic comedy which nevertheless contains a number of funny scenes and was notable for starting off the HudsonÐDay partnership and a run of similar comedies which survived the sixties.
A very feel good Doris Day and Rock Hudson musical. Jan Morrow (Doris) and Brad Allen (Rock) share a party line which Brad always seems to be using to seduce women much to Jan's annoyance. Brad's best friend (Tony Randall) lfancies himself in love with Jan and unknowingly reveals to Brad her party line hogger. Obviously, after seeing Jan, Brad can't resist a challenge and to woo her, he plays Rex Stetson, a Texas rancher visiting New York. This is where the fun begins and despite the predictablity you're still going to enjoy the fun fun fun!
