Woody - Scratched Inside?
By ChrisGreenhough (1 review) from London, UK , 25 May 2010[Highly rated reviewer]
Unlike, I suspect, some of the people who have 'reviewed' this new release (and yes, I mean you, the critics) I have actually seen this movie. I say that because it seems to me that some of the opinions currently circulating are simply knee-jerk, lazy journalism knocked out in response to either the subject matter or the leading actors without really making an effort to leave those easy headline-grabbers aside and take the time to watch and judge the work on its own merits. Instead, they merely resort to cynical sniping and ready-to-wear, review-speak epithets.
So let's set one thing straight. This is not an easy movie. Nor is it a gather-the-family-around-the-box movie. But it is a movie with nerve and heart... and humour. In fact, humour is one of its undoubted strengths, whether it be our main protagonist Woody's musings to camera or the delightful turns from Wil Johnson (Lord Byron Atembe, hilarious) and Martin Compston (the salacious Zeb) or the great chemistry between Robert Cavanah (Woody) and Billy Boyd (the pusillanimous Chief), to say nothing of Danny Dyer (Stanley) in trademark 'geezer' mode, laced with menace and a nasty relish for violence which is as funny as it is disturbing. And don't even get me started on the swearing ('C__t Box!').
While the supporting cast all deliver the goods on every level, at heart, this is really Woody's (Cavanah) and Stanley's (Dyer) story. The two leads offer typically visceral performances, and this, I suppose, is what lends a movie like this its Marmite-like propensity for dividing opinion so drastically. I don't say that to be glib. Some people will not like it. That's a fact. It has a strong taste not made for every palate. But for those made of sterner stuff, this is a film with much flavour to offer...
Please ignore the bandwagon-jumping critics who all seem to be tripping over each other to bash Danny Dyer right now (rightly or wrongly) and give credit where it's due. I've deliberately avoided plot spoilers (unlike at least one of the reviews I've seen online) in favour of trying to convey the fact that this movie deserves to be seen. You may just find yourself liking Marmite, after all...- Was this review helpful to you?

Danny Dyer-bolical...
By jimjimerney (1 review) , 11 Mar 2012Most of Danny Dyers films get low ratings by those who don't really understand the world/lifestyle he is portraying so I rented this anyway. Those who gave it a low rating were, for once, right on the money. Don't even think about renting this, its shocking. I like Danny Dyer and have done since I first saw Human Traffic years ago but this, this is the worst film he has ever done. Even Borstal Boy was better.- Was this review helpful to you?

Dyer - Stick to what you do best.
By a customer , 11 Feb 2012Switched off @ 10:56
Total crud so far, nothing has caught my interest, and the characters already annoy me.
Dyer has a lot to learn about writing, and creating characters.- Was this review helpful to you?

'Most helpful member's review' appears to have been written by a member of the director's production company (http://www.randrfilm.com/people/chris-greenhough/ ) - which may be why it is one of the few positive reviews.
Full disclosure - I didn't make it to the end. The 'humour' is pathetic, the swearing is literally pointless unlike other movies which use it for effect and the racism and misogyny is merely incidental as there is no plot to speak of.
Rent Nil by Mouth if you want true London grit or the Long Good Friday if you want gangsters.
I'd hoped that this would be amusingly bad given Dyer's reputation. It isn't. It's inept dross.- Was this review helpful to you?
