Fumihiko Sori's (known here simply as Sori) directorial debut is a stylish hybrid of the high-school buddy movie and the sporting underdog melodrama. Based on a manga comic, this tale of two boys whose friendship is tested by their participation in a local table-tennis tournament gets inside the competitive mind while considering the mechanics of friendship and the transience of glory. The loyalty that the taciturn, ironically named Smile (Arata) shows the grandstanding Peco (Yosuke Kubozuka) is genuinely touching, yet Sori is just as intrigued by the fierce rivalry between the duo and some posh, shaven-headed poseurs. The matches are filmed with grace and panache, with the inspired slo-mo passages enabling us to read the emotions of the players at key points in both the contests and their lives.

Engaging movie about the pains, pleasures and transcendence of sport, set among extremely competitive high school teams and with some dazzling photography of the games.

    Quirky And Fun...

this film is based around two friends, Peco and Smile, who play ping pong for their school in Japan. Despite the irritating Peco whose ceaseless rantings and shoutings did little to make him endearing, this movie was still very enjoyable. The plot was indepth, not revolving around ping pong but using it as a vehicle to get across the characters messages. This isn't just an average sport flick it focuses much more on the relationship of the two main characters with charming effect. And it's funny.
