The movie is based on novel by Amrita Pritam. Screenplay is excellent and so are performances especiallly of Manoj Bajpai. Urmilla has put in an effort. The supporting cast does its job well. It is tear-jerker made in the background of partition and preindependence days of India. Has good music. It is one of the good ones coming out of bollywood.
Issue-based but emotionally honest. An exploration of the fate of women who are abducted or raped, in a society where families have to choose between rejecting them or keeping them for the rest of their lives as unmarriageable economic burdens. The social consensus was traditionally in favour of rejection, and families were pressured into this. With the war of partition, so many were affected that attitudes softened. How do you live as a wife and mother with a man who has done this to you? Find out here. Heart scalding, but, finally, uplifting and humane.
