DVD sales for summer blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest broke UK records this week, after selling 1.5 million copies since its release on November 20th. The piratical sequel, starring Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, beat the previous record of 1.4 million sales held by Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. If ever a film had enough publicity then surely Johnny Depp's new swashbuckling flick Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is it. However, going on the maxim that all publicity is good publicity, a screenwriter in the US claims Disney plundered his buccaneer screenplay to make the first Pirates Of The Caribbean movie. Leading ladies Halle Berry, Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Aniston were all winners at the 33rd annual People's Choice Awards, with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest also picking up a couple of trophies. It takes an age before Johnny Depp shows his face in Pirates the Third, and when he does, it's the tip of his nose that looms into screen left, eventually succeeded by a flaring nostril. I doubt there's been a larger, longer close up of a proboscis this side of Seabiscuit. The Transformers sequel has become a surefire success at the box office a day before the film is released in the U.S. - it's already among the top 25 pre-sellers of all time.
