Did I Leave the Gas On?
By R3DZ3D (9 reviews) from Farnham , 13 Jul 2006[Highly rated reviewer]
I thoroughly enjoyed the first 'Pirates' film, but 'Pirates 2' leaves you with a faint suspicion that maybe you should have got more out of it.
Whilst it could never be accused of failing to deliver one spectacular action sequence after another, what it sadly lacks is continuity. You are rushed from one death defying and in many cases nigh on impossible stunt to the next, whilst dropping in a tasty character development to keep you wanting more.
At well over 2 hours long it still feels rushed, as if they need to fit in as much as possible. In this sense, it is very like other "second in the trilogy" films, and ends with a suitable cliff hanger to keep you salivating till next summer.
Despite the bumpy ride it ticks all the boxes for fantastic set pieces, beautiful scenery and swashbuckling action. Johnny Depp is as over the top as ever, (and brilliantly so), and Bill Nighy provides a very suitable counterpart in tentacle faced Davy Jones, complete with his crew of aquatic monstrosities.
The script contains some genuinely funny moments, and plenty of intriguing references to make you want to watch the original again. All in all, a good way to pass an evening, but dont go expecting any dramatic changes from the original.- Was this review helpful to you?

(506)good family film with a touch of a dark side
By Daura (67 reviews) from Coventry , 01 Jan 2013The first outing for the priates of the caribean saga. Johnny Depp brings his uncanny eccentricity to the lead role, and the adventures begin accross teh seas and a somewhat eerie and dark undertone. Thers a love story, search for treasure and lots of perile! what more could you need for this family classic - oh yes lots of comedy moments!- Was this review helpful to you?

Pirates 2&3 are one plot!!
By geezee (1 review) , 08 Jul 2012If you only watch this film you will have more questions than answers! It's a very long film but probably better to rent both and set asside half a day in one go :)
Apart from that the acting is as good, the effects as fun and the surprises as big as those in number 1!
Enjoy- Was this review helpful to you?

Wonderful, wonderful film
By a customer , 10 May 2012Cracking film - wonderful special effects (especially of The Flying Dutchman and her crew), good storyline, great rapport between the actors, some goodies and baddies, some amusement - all in all wonderful viewing, not just for the family, but every individual therein.
To my mind superior to the first film in the series- Was this review helpful to you?

Sparrow a joke. Davy Jones a triumph
By Me12 (5 reviews) , 09 Mar 2012Since I watched the first then third Pirates film then finally came to this I'm going to give it a decent 2. 5 rating.
But, this is nowhere near as good as the first and third films (I haven't seen the fourth but not interested without Kiera Knightly!)
From where the first was a little darker and Jack Sparrow a more menacing character in this one he looks a little like a joke. Got really bored and couldn't wait for to finish.
Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) was immense though. As always.- Was this review helpful to you?

a good film, just way too long
By bizmandan (54 reviews) , 12 Nov 2011This second instalment of the Pirates franchise is a lot darker and isn't quite as child-friendly and silly as the loriginal . Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest delivers everything you'd want from it and more, it delivers more than you'd want from any movie! It's a funny, epic, and an exciting sequel; the only problem is that it doesn't really need to be two and a half hours long.
You'll only notice the length occasionally; however, as most of the film will have you reasonably entertained, you will be happily taking in rollicking pirate myths, truly believable (and much improved from the last film) special effects, and thoroughly fleshed-out characters. The sheer number of stories, characters and locations presented is one thing that might leave you scratching your head and saying, 'I thought this movie was based on a theme park ride?'
Female lead Keira Knightley is given the much-needed chance to express real sexual chemistry in this film, both with Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp .
A subplot with returning character Commodore Norrington (Jack Davenport ) is a cool idea but was badly executed; with simple changes, this character could have been employed as the root of the film's entire overarching plot. Instead, a somewhat contrived powdered-wig corporate villain is thrown in to do the job, I really didnt see the need for him to be in the film at all!
This bad guy is not the only new bad guy thrown into the mix, we have the other bad guy, fish-man Davy Jones (the delightful Bill Nighy ), who sends a monster bad guy (a mythological beast called the Kraken, which Im sure is from Clash Of The Titans ) after the Black Pearl.
If you think all these bad guys sound like a bad idea, you might be surprised to find that it works quite well, unlike some Batman movies I could mention.
If you're a die-hard lover of the adventure genre and the ever brilliant character actor that is Johnny Depp and you relish grandiose action sequences (such as a three-man sword fight on, within, and around a giant water-wheel sent rolling uncontrollably through a jungle), you will more than likely love this film. If you have little patience for long films, I dont think you will enjoy this as we dont even get a conclusion by the end in an obvious attempt to make as much money as possible from the franchise with a cash cow sequel.- Was this review helpful to you?
