As this box-office smash is based on one of Disney's most famous theme-park attractions, we might have expected a shiver-me-timbers swashbuckler that's short on plot and long on action. Not so. It delivers plenty of both. With producer Jerry Bruckheimer at the rudder, this lavish Hollywood voyage into pirate country effortlessly fills its two hours plus as blacksmith Orlando Bloom and governor's daughter Keira Knightley fall foul of cursed buccaneers. The real treasure comes courtesy of Oscar-nominated Johnny Depp, who delivers a swaggering, slurring, mascara-wearing turn as rascal Jack Sparrow, a seafaring rock-star type and an irresistible comic hero. Geoffrey Rush also milks his role to the hilt as an archetypal pirate captain, and some superb special effects reveal the skeletal curse of the Black Pearl's crew under moonlight. This is infinitely superior to the ride itself.
Over-long romp, based on a Disney theme-park ride, that wears out its welcome; it doesn't know when to end and takes a long time to start, but in between offers a few thrills.
"...An often frenetic, colorful and enchanting comic adventure....The dazzling, high-flying silliness is quite an achievement..."
Good alround fun for all the family. A little horror, a little fun, a lot of entertainment. Recommend this is one to watch.
I absolutely loved this film. I had no idea it would be as funny as it was. Jonny Depp had a well-deserved best actor for this, and as for 'Gareth' from The Office as the pirate with the wooden glass-eye 'it splinters something terrible', what a character.
Good story, plenty of laughs, good acting, excellent effects, a real swash-buckling adventure that Errol Flynn would have been proud of.
Loads of fun and one film I will watch over and over.
You have to watch it.
what can i say- this is the best film of recent years. im a huge johnny depp fan and anyone whos seen this film should completly understand why!!!when i heard he was doing a disney pirarate film i thought hed lost it but im glad to report its his best role since edward scissorhands. the cast is great (although keira knightly grates on you a bit)rent this now you wont be disapointed!!!

Hughly enjoyable pirate yarn, set upon the high seas .. Spectacular special effects, good flowing storyline and well acted - especially by the wonderfully over-the-top Johnny Depp. This movie will appeal to all ages .. ENJOY !!
In the best Summer film of the year - Pirates came from nowhere and blew all of it's rivals out of the water.
Smart, funny and with some great performances (ok over the top - but still great) this was the best New Blockbuster of the year and certainly the funniest.
Depp is back to his best in what may be known as the Year of the Depp - and the support from all around be it script, effects or other actors is top notch.
Do yourself a favour and watch this film me old sparrow.
Being British and never having heard of the ride this film was based on, I just looked forward to viewing the first pirate film in a shamefully long time. I wasnt disappointed! I'd read that Mr Depp had fought the opinions of the producers to play the lead in a unique style. Well fought sir! His portrayal of Captain Jack as a 'ozzy' style character, weaving, swaying and appearing out of his head, although curiously hardly drinking at all, was hillarious! Orlando Bloom as the geek to hero character was super, although I felt he was a little too cool at the start. But that's his blessing and his curse! Thank goodness they cast Keira Knightly rather than the British wooden choice (Rachel Weisz, the mummy) as she is an actress who totally becomes her character. The storyline was unique and well thought although a few paradoxes reared their heads! Think about 'bootstrap bill' at the bottom of the ocean! He must have been ALIVE! All in all, great references for the adults, and pirate japes for the kids! Watchable again and again!
This film has to be the best film we have seen in ages. The whole family enjoyed it; a lovely peaceful Sunday afternoon was had by all. A must see film. The effects on the film were outstanding.
Wonderful rollicking entertainment.
Johnny Depp steals the show but all the cast are good.
Utter rubbish - this is just a rant as there is little worth mentioning.
Poor acting, directing, editing, no plot worth thinking about and the lowest production values of any film made in the last 50 years. This is especially noticeable in the timing between the actors - surely its a case of snipping a few frames.
Is Johnny Depp impersonationg David Bowie?
This really is a stinker as many TV & Radio critics have bent over backwards to emphasise.
There are other bad films which are almost necessarily bad due to financial limitations and the lack of the modern technical advances (that guy in a bear suit with a fish bowl as a helmet and flying saucers on strings). They however have acheived a cult staus, this is just drivel, this is not bad it is awful, actually bad at being bad, which I guess is mediocre or something.
Don't watch it. Don't even watch it to see how bad it is.
That guy out of the office is in it and looks promising.
This was a fantastic film, we really enjoyed it and decided we had to buy it so we can watch it again and again. Jonny Depp is very good and it really has a story, not just lots of action with a thin plot to join them together. Well worth the viewing.
