The good old days - when Vin's talent was bigger than his ego!
By Gerry McKibbin from Belfast, NI , 27 Aug 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
An enjoyable space monster movie where the on-screen action belies the small budget. Vin Diesel uses his bulk and gruff tones to good effect in portraying Riddick, one of the baddest bad-asses in the galaxy. The remaining cast all support to the best of their abilities and at least the aliens look original. Its a pity Diesel started to believe his own hype - in this and his other early appearances, there was a lot of promise; now lost to sad predictable no-brainers like xXx or The Fast and the Furious, as Vin's ego starts to severely eclipse Vin's ability. And don't get me started on the disaster that is The Chronicles of Riddick!- Was this review helpful to you?

(115)Dull, dull, dull
By TimTheEnchanter (9 reviews) from Cheltenham , 05 Oct 2012This is my kind of genre but this was pitiful, lacklustre and unengaging. Vin Diesel (what were his parents thinking??) mumbles his way through the plot - and I use the word loosely - without really doing anything apart from looking troubled and sitting down a lot. Maybe he hurt his back while going to the shops but he's less agile than my granny who's 193.
Not enough guns and death and that either, just lots of interminable sitting around looking like they need the loo but not quite yet. The monster things looked a bit like Pteranodon or maybe Rhamphorynchus but they were ungainly and cumbersome and just not really scarey. I surfed on the tinterweb for lack of any exciting screen activity so if I missed anything remarkable, just you holler now.- Was this review helpful to you?

Really, really poor ... and annoying!
By Platospupil (195 reviews) , 05 Jan 2012I did not get to the end so I have to be honest and say that I cannot review the film as a whole. The plot is hopeful and the ideas behind the film are fine .. but the execution is just awful. Terrible stereotypes (prayerful Muslims, loopy Brits and grave cops included), unbelievable coincidences (crash on strange planet but they can breath the air, gravity, etc.. is fine), inconsistent story lines (air seems to be less dense, hence people get tired easily .. but then rush around like nuts), poor suspense and some of the acting is just cringe making. OK, I got it wrong. I read the other reviews and was looking forward to this .. A mistake.- Was this review helpful to you?
