This science fiction anthology features DOOM, together with PITCH BLACK and the sequel, THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK. PITCH BLACK is a dark, atmospheric sci-fi thriller with a sharp sense of humour, in which a spacecraft crashes on a mysterious planet, forcing the remaining survivors to seek help from a convicted murderer, Riddick. It appears that the only life form on the planet is a dangerous species of flesh-eating alien that emerges from underground when darkness appears. Before long, the abandoned passengers realise that a rare eclipse is about to immerse the planet in darkness - the hunt is on.

It might start out resembling another assembly-line sci-fi saga, but this visually stunning adventure soon becomes as thrilling as it is imaginatively striking. The setting is a world with three suns, where a tri-solar eclipse allows screeching, flesh-hungry creatures to emerge from underground. The motley crew that must traverse this nightmare landscape is led by tough guy Vin Diesel, whose charismatic performance is pitched somewhere between Mad Max and the T-1000 from Terminator 2. With the first half sporting a brilliant desert surrealism and the second loaded with stylised gore, director David Twohy's futuristic frightener is a vivid and unique achievement.
"...Vin Diesel's demeanor is refreshing and the combination of his voice and physical build make his character memorable....Not since the coming of the Terminator has there been an anti-hero so worth cheering..."
An enjoyable space monster movie where the on-screen action belies the small budget. Vin Diesel uses his bulk and gruff tones to good effect in portraying Riddick, one of the baddest bad-asses in the galaxy. The remaining cast all support to the best of their abilities and at least the aliens look original. Its a pity Diesel started to believe his own hype - in this and his other early appearances, there was a lot of promise; now lost to sad predictable no-brainers like xXx or The Fast and the Furious, as Vin's ego starts to severely eclipse Vin's ability. And don't get me started on the disaster that is The Chronicles of Riddick!
The first 10 mins really grab you attention, then it goes into wierd 1/2 hr where not a lot seems to happen and Vin Deisel puts out the mean vibe not too convincingly, a bit contrived, then it really picks up the pace and gets better & better! A real escape into sci-finess, great aliens!
What do we really know about the folks we meet on holiday – and why doesn’t that stop us from spilling our own secrets? Those are the questions percolating through this semi-inventive variation on a Deliverance style thriller. A honeymooning couple go hiking down a remote but beautiful Hawaiian coastal trail. Cliff is a screenwriter (Steve Zahn). Cydney (Milla Jovovich) is just happy to be there. But they’re both a bit freaked to hear news reports about the gruesome double... Read more
