The thief, his wife, her lover and a weirdo from the swamps
By a customer from Colchester, England , 17 Aug 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
The plot involves a wife-beating, criminal husband, an unfaithful wife, her rich lover, and a weirdo from the backwoods who is the husband's best friend, and who happens to be in love with the wife. Can you guess what happens? Yes, you're right! This is a film about adultery, violence, revenge, rejection and betrayal, though not necessarily in that order. Yes, it's been done before, many times but it's a story of which we never tire when it's done well, as it as here.
I thought this was an excellent film. The script was well written. The plot was sound. The characters were plausible. The acting was good. The musical score was haunting (a bit like Gorecki's Third Symphony). And the ending was messy but satisfying.
As a bonus, there were some superb supporting characters such a cynical female police officer and the wife's daft, fortune-telling friend.
This is not a Hollywood blockbuster with special effects and big name stars. It's much better than that. Not to be missed. Enjoy!- Was this review helpful to you?
