Planes, Trains And Automobiles

All Neal Page (Steve Martin) wants to do is make it home from a business trip in New York City and spend Thanksgiving with his family in Chicago. Instead, he finds himself rerouted from New York's La Guardia Airport to Wichita, Kansas. With no other options, Neal decides to share a room in a fleabag hotel with Del Griffith (John Candy), a shower-curtain-ring salesman and fellow stranded traveler. Although Neal finds Del to be a buffoon, he just can't seem to get away from him. To make matters worse, all their efforts to get back to Chicago fail as trains break down and rental cars catch on fire. Along the way they encounter crazy cabbies, redneck truck drivers, and oversexed bus passengers. John Hughes's (SIXTEEN CANDLES, THE BREAKFAST CLUB) first film to feature adults after his success with teen films features fine performances from Martin and Candy. Kevin Bacon, who appeared in Hughes's next film, SHE'S HAVING A BABY, makes a small but humorous appearance, as does Edie McClurg, known for her role as the high school secretary in FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF.

Steve Martin and John Candy give excellent performances as the not-so-good companions desperately trying to get home for Thanksgiving in this amiable comedy, which sends up the vagaries of the whole American transport system. Written and directed by Home Alone creator John Hughes, it veers uneasily between slapstick and sentiment. Yet, the cheerfully astute playing by the disaster-prone “little-and-large” leads ensures that the farcical proceedings are always fun to watch.

    A Classic of its time!

Candy makes a fantastic affable salesman who takes life in his stride and Martin the perfect choice as the miserable rich guy who expects all to go well. the kind of movie you can easily watch more than once with classic scenes and memorable moments, the nails in the dashboard scene and the cuddling up in bed were perfectly executed by two of the funniest guys in showbiz, a truly memorable tribute for John Candy.

John Hughes: “Don’t you… Forget about me.”

    • 11 Aug 2009

First Michael Jackson and now John Hughes. For those of us who were still growing up in the 1980s this summer is a rude reminder that we’re all getting older, and faster than we thought. Hughes – who died from a heart-attack last week at the age of 59 – can’t really be compared to Jackson in terms of fame or artistry. Most people probably never saw a picture of him before this week. But don’t underestimate Hughes’ impact on those teenagers who would turn... Read more
