This Opera has sub titles contrary to another posting. The production is of course modern - Impossible to do it any other way as it requires a contemporary audience to be on stage as part of the opera. This is a wonderfully inventive and witty production that keeps faith to the letter of the libretto and score, Gods descend , thunderbolts are thrown , and ballets take place.
Mark Minkowski is a superb conductor but he can also act, when he is required to be part of the action, of not many conductors can you say that. All the singing is wonderful but of course the astonishing skill and stamina of Paul Agnew is in a league of its own. The dancing is inventive often very funny but at all times rhythmically precise and in love with Rameau's music.
i didn't know anything about this opera, but i like the music of j.p.rameau.
however i was put off when i saw the modern setting, i prefer period settings, also there were no subtitles so i couldn't follow and i got put off. the music andsinging were very good tho'
