Adapted by Woody Allen from his own 1969 stage play, this is one of the very few entries on his CV that America's leading film auteur has not directed himself. That task fell to Herbert Ross, who adopts an overcautious approach to the story of film buff Allen's tentative relationship with Diane Keaton, the wife of best pal Tony Roberts. But such is the calibre of the playing and the assurance of the writing that it's almost impossible to resist.
