This is Clint Eastwood's first film as director and star. He plays a radio DJ who has a one-night stand with a female caller, Evelyn. However, she is gradually revealed as a disturbed and murderous woman who comes close to ruining his life and killing him. Influenced by Hitchcock, this builds up a good level of suspense and drama and the actress who plays Evelyn is particularly good.
