this film is superb. it starts with brother and sister, David and Jennifer arguing over what to watch on T.V.

Daivd wants to watch his favourite show 'Pleasantville' which is a black and white show set in the 1950's.

Jennifer wants to watch a music show.

Their argument leads to the remote control being broken, at which point a mysterious repairman leaves them a new one.

When using this remote control, it transports the pair to the idyllic place on the tv called Pleasantville.

Finding themselves trapped in this monochrome ( black and white) world, they try to fit in whilst finding a way back to reality.

The people of Pleasantville have never experienced art, rain, colour, or anything less than perfection, and have no awareness of a world or life outside of their town.

The arrival of the two teenagers sparks a change, and gradually colour and reality start encroaching on the life of this little town.

At this point we see the uglier side of reality developing, as some of the townspeople turn against the 'coloureds' and fight against any change in their existence.

This is a wonderful film to watch. It has a magical and funny side, whilst also managing to address the issue of prejudice.

Tobey Macguire and Reese Witherspoon, play the brother and sister roles in this film and are a perfect foil for each other.

    well worth renting out.

This is a lovely film which covers very serious issues in a deceptively saccharine way, in keeping with the era in which our protagonists find themselves.

  • More than pleasantville.

Thoroughly enjoyed this film - in a similar vain to the Truman Show and Groundhog Day. An interesting view of how passion and love grew in the public consciousness in the US alongside the development of colour TV. The reason for the characters going into the Pleasantville show is a little ill thought through but, ignoring that, its a gently, compassionate film suited to teens and adults (especially those of us that need to remember to keep the colour in our lives). Also, a light comment on attitudes to difference - and links to 'coloureds' and the value of being positive to people from diverse backgrounds.

  • a modern Wizard of Oz!

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHide

Just put this on while dinner was cooking but my husband loved it! William H. Macy brings his unusual / usual quirk to the film which makes parts hillarious. Can be compared to 'The Truman Show' but from the inside out. Portraying a colour revolution when 20th century meets 50s America in 'Pleasantville' also touching on the Women's Liberation Movement and issues of tolerance. Cleverly executed black and white to colour that is almost spooky - a modern Wizard of Oz!

  • Clever and beautiful film that shows colour and passion are the meaning of life.

This is such a thoughtful film, beautifully acted and under-stated. Many themes are captured and it really makes you think. I think it was all about love and passion; when people could connect to what they truly believed and wanted for themselves as individuals with humanity, their lives became rich with colour and meaning. In today's world, we need people who connect to their purpose and have the courage to follow their dreams when the others seem stuck in a conformist grey world, with conformist grey ways.

A clever story that works on a number of levels. Freedom, tolerance, beauty, vitality, risk and change are just some of the themes covered here. Change is not always comfortable, yet, it is vital in a world of freedom and progress. Some interesting special effects enables the movie to reach its potential. I like films with a good message and this one does not disappoint. Overall a really enjoyable watch
