After making a big splash with his first film, Boyz N the Hood, John Singleton lost his way somewhat with this twee, right-on drama that charts the burgeoning romance between hairdresser and poetess Janet Jackson and postal worker Tupac Shakur as they get to know each other on the road to Oakland. Mawkish and well-intentioned instead of gritty and real, the movie is saved by the acting of the two leads — Shakur, especially, had a natural presence in front of the camera and his murder in 1996 brought a promising film career to an end. Incidentally, Maya Angelou wrote the poetry for Jackson's character.
A disappointing second film from the director of Boyz N The Hood, much closer to a conventional soap opera and with a clumsy and contrived narrative.
Not a very good film I found it really hard and slow to get into and ended up tuning it off. A very slow start.
It doesn't matter how good ( or bad ) a film is, I have got to the point now where there is just so much unwarranted bad language in films these days that frankly I just don't want to hear it! I got through the first 15 mins of this film and switched off on that premis alone. Sorry, but it just does not cut it with me any longer. I am feed up with the language that appears to being accepted into society these days. With films like this being hailed as good - one wonders what will be next!
