Point Break

POINT BREAK is a high-velocity thrill ride in which clean-cut FBI agent Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves) goes head to head with surfer renegade Bodhi (Patrick Swayze). Rookie Utah is assigned to go undercover to investigate a string of 28 bank robberies by a gang called the Ex-Presidents. With very little to go on--the Ex-Presidents are adept at their trade, deal only in cash, and never leave behind clues--Utah's only lead comes from his partner Pappas (Gary Busey). Pappas believes that the Ex-Presidents are a surfer gang, lead by charismatic adrenaline junkie Bodhi. Posing as a surfer himself, Utah slowly becomes a member of Bodhi's gang, enticed by his energy and craziness. As Utah's investigation goes deeper, with dazzling extreme sports hijinks that involve night surfing, sky diving, and well-executed bank robberies that serve as the glue between his world and Bodhi's, Utah must ultimately choose between duty and friendship. Director Kathryn Bigelow presents a well-sculpted masterpiece with this action-lover's dream, adding another gem to an already glowing filmography (K-19: THE WIDOWMAKER, WILD PALMS, and THE WEIGHT OF WATER).

Kathryn Bigelow shows the Boys' Own adventure is not just the preserve of the lads in this silly but hugely enjoyable thriller. Keanu Reeves plays the young FBI agent who unsurprisingly makes a very convincing surfing dude when he goes undercover to infiltrate a gang, headed by Patrick Swayze, suspected of carrying out a string of audacious bank robberies. Try to ignore the mystical claptrap and concentrate instead on Bigelow's stunningly conceived action set pieces, as well as some exhilarating sky-diving and surfing scenes. For Reeves, this proved to be a dry, or more accurately wet, run for Speed, and he acquits himself reasonably well, while Swayze makes a convincing enough villain. The reliable supporting players include Gary Busey, John McGinley and James LeGros.

    Brilliant!

This is a brilliant movie; it has plenty of action and a great storyline. It achieves both of these without getting cheesy, which is refreshing to say the least.

You definitely won't regret renting this one.

Does it get any better than this?

This is one of my favourite films of all time in any genre. The ending is slightly cheesy but is still a very good end to a very good film.

In my opinion, this is Patrick Swayze's best performance as the very, VERY focused Bodhi. You get the feeling Bodhi is seriously unhinged but manages to keep it in check by focusing on his objectives. The penetrating stare Swayze has when talking about getting kicks of any sort is electrifying. It makes him instantly recognizable when wearing his mask during robberies, and this is mixed with the moral side of him (when he nearly stopped and helped Keanu Reeves' Johnny Utah when he put his knee out during their chase) as he manages to make the many sides of Bodhi totally believable.

Gary Busey's performance is also noteworthy for being so understated, letting the main characters shape the story but providing excellent backup.

Keanu Reeves is not given much to do in this film acting-wise but does a very good job with what his given.

But for me, this film belongs to Patrick Swayze - masterful bit of casting.

    Point Break broken

Surf's out for the Point Break sequel - the film has been shelved. Point Break Indo was due to shoot in Australia and Indonesia without the stars of the 1991 original, and Lori Petty, who appeared in the cult film, isn't surprised the film project has drowned without her, Patrick Swayze or Keanu Reeves. She tells MovieHole.net, "How can do they do a sequel and not put me, Keanu or Patrick in it? I mean, even a cameo - like a Where's Waldo kind of thing. "(We could be) in the background... Read more
