its not in anyway a good film, its spine chillingly BAD!!

I saw this back when it was released under the title The Assassin and it hasn't aged well

With so many variations of the Nikita story now it's a shame that this one is the weakest as I initially loved it when I was a teenager.

The main issue here is not the acting or story (how could it it's a great one) but an issue which affects a bunch of films released within the 90's.

The soundtrack is ghastly and more than a little intrusive as it blasts through every scene taking away from moments that could have been better served relying on the dialogue alone.

I also think the film moves a a far too brisk pace in a rush to get to the next moment of action rather than spending time to develop the characters.

Fonda is also a little unbelievable as a super assassin. I know it's the point of her character but I just have trouble buying her in the role.

Unfortunately a couple of scenes are sprinkled with some light humor which can seem rather out of place and at times border on farce (the supermarket scene springs to mind)

The films highlight has to be the Harvey Keitel appearance as a cleaner which is very similar to his later role in Pulp Fiction.

This isn't a bad time filler but don't expect to much from it. It your a fan of the Nikita character you going to be more than a little disappointed

Terrible - very dated, formulaic, and badly acted. Originally thought this was a made for TV version of Besson's Nikita - but apparently this was a major release. If you can read, watch the original.

In a way this movie is a victim of its own success. Bridget Fonda plays a hitgirl for a shady government agency, but since she can neither reveal anything of this life to anyone nor disclose how events led up to that point, she remains enigmatic to the point of our indifference. There is nothing wrong with Fonda's acting and she is certainly sexy. If I prefer her mother that may be my age talking. But the role undoes itself through sheer reticence. The action is good; Dermot Mulroney as the baffled and unconfided-in lover is excellent; and Gabriel Byrne as her superior does a good job; while Anne Bancroft is magnificent, about as hard to typecast as the wind is to harness. The music - Nina Simone -is to die for or, in my case, to be married to

I really enjoyed this film when I watched it in the 90's for the first time and haven't seen it since. Although the picture and soundtrack is a bit dated now I still really enjoyed the storyline and the acting is good so that made up for it. If you didn't enjoy the original 'Nikita' though I don't see much point wasting your time watching this one, the original is usually the best.
