    [Highly rated reviewer]

Gothic and dark story with suitably chilly large country home setting and evocative musical support. These productions have moved with the times and this is nothing like the cosy, comfortable early films. The whole look is steely grey with menacing shadows. Although probably said a thousand times before David Suchet's performance as Poirot easily outshines all those who have gone before. The oily. boarish, Albert Finney turn was at serious odds with a character so pernickety, and Ustinov although gentle was rather boyish and lightweight. Suchet embodies the steely intelligence of Poirot and tempers the avenging anger with calm calculation and sensitivity.

Suchet is such an accomplished actor and is the epitomy of Poirot. The costumes and general scenery are marvellous and a joy to watch
