When the Police Academy adopts a completely open admissions policy, no height or weight restriction, and most worryingly no intelligence tests. Hence a large number of unemployable social misfits promptly enroll. The academy instructors have the most difficult wave of recruits to train up: they include Laverne Hooks the tiny .. Read more

It's hard to imagine that, back in 1984, anyone would have thought this would spawn six sequels as well as a cartoon series. However, somehow it managed to strike a chord with audiences around the world and made a star (well, briefly anyway) out of Steve Guttenberg. And, while the follow-ups became increasingly puerile as the series went on, the original film produces its fair share of belly laughs. Guttenberg leads a group of oddballs, who probably shouldn't even be allowed to watch cops on television, into police training, where they clash with authority but prove themselves in the end. It's crude and juvenile, but fans will be in heaven.
Appallingly unfunny series of snippets about police training, like an American Carry On with few jokes leading to a punch line and occasional resorting to dirty bits.
This film is mint. The comic timing the fresh jokes the innuendos, oh how I laughed until I soiled myself. I watched Police Academy as a ten year old boy, and even if I wasn't a ten year old boy I still would have watched it. Some movie critics say Guttenburg is bland and uninspiring but I say anyone who can act opposite a robot in short circuit and truly believe that Johnny Five is alive should be declared king of all method actors. I'll never forget you Guttenberg. Even if the rest of the movie world has.
Even though i love all the Police Academy films, you have to take this movie for what it really is.
It's not hilarious but when first released it was something pleasantly different that was so successful it spawned 6 sequels, a tv show and a cartoon show.
Useless recruits join the police force and cause havok.
A good cast of mainly unknowns with some funny situations.
Sadly, the dvd doesn't have any bonus features which would have been great to watch if you're a fan.
The man who starred in numerous 1980s classics such as Police Academy and Short Circuit has signed up for a new thriller entitled The Well. Steve Guttenberg, who played cadet Mahoney in the Police Academy series and also found fame in Three Men and a Baby, will play the father of a missing boy in the new film. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the plot centres on a couple going through a divorce who team up to find their son after he vanishes. It could be a return to bigger movie projects... Read more
