    [Highly rated reviewer]

This show is trying to be funny by making the pope look like a spoilt child and the cardinals money obsessed monsters. In this it gets it right but it fails in every other aria. I laughed twice in the beginning and then the one joke that is played throughout the series becomes overbearing and boring. This is NOT good and if you like Family Guy, South Park, Simpsons, ext. Dont even bother with this one its has no wit and no variety.

Popetown is an animated series and features the voice talents of amongst others Ruby Wax, Jerry Hall, Bob Mortimer, Matt Lucas, and Mackenzie Crook. It is best described as a cross between Father Ted and South Park and parodies the beurocracy, corruption, and pure silliness of the corporation that is the Catholic Church. It was first comissioned for UK television but was never shown following complaints from religious groups. It was however sold to Italian Television where it was shown without any complaints from the Vatican itself.

It is very, very funny and deserves to be seen by as many people as possible.

A strange one this. I watched the first episode and laughed constantly. Great characters, funny situations, clever ideas, all here. Carried on watching the rest of the episodes, and soon became bored. The jokes became stale quite quickly. I'm sure if I'd watched one episode a week on TV like a normal sit-com I would have continued to find it funny, but watching all the episodes back to back didn't help the cause.

If you rent this one, you might be disappointed if you sit down to watch it in one go. It will still raise a few smiles though.

I really wanted to like this as I really support home grown animation, but it just didn't work for me. Resorting to fart gags and vintage, boarderline racist material just didn't cut it. I seem to remember that this title courted scandal when it came out because of it's cheeky views on the RC faith. I doubt anyone would find it offensive just pretty poor. It needs to identify a target audience and stick with it. If it's supposed to be a politically charged satire it should stick to it's guns rather than joke about bodily functions and resort to nonsensical, unfunny farce.

  • Fun, but not particularly sophisticated

Popetown is a fun little animation from James Bachman and Mackenzie Crook (of The Office fame), which quite obviously parodies the Vatican and Catholic church, portraying the pope as a young child. This show ws produced by the BBC, but not aired for obvious 'we don't want to be sued by the Vatican' reasons.

The show is moderately funny, but nothing that'll knock you off your seat. However if you want a laugh at the Vatican's expense, give it a go.
