SEMINAL BRITISH COMEDY
By Derek Pearson from SADDLEWORTH , 07 Jun 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
I KNOW, I KNOW, IT'S NEVER OFF THE 'BOX' BUT THIS STUFF CAN BE WATCHED AND WATCHED. EVERYTHING IS PERFECT, THE CAST (STEREOTYPES, I KNOW!!), THE WRITING, EVEN THE MURKY LIGHTING AND MUTED COLOUR OF THE SETS. COMEDY FROM A BYGONE AGE BUT NON THE WORSE FOR THAT, IF YOU CAN'T FIND THIS FUNNY, EVEN AFTER REPEATED 'REPEATS' YOU'D BETTER CHECK IF YOU'VE GOT A PULSE.- Was this review helpful to you?

Classic Comedy
By Pops2221 (28 reviews) from Leicester , 31 Aug 2009This is a delight - right from the start when Ronnie Barker sentences himself to 5 yrs imprisonment (listen to the voice of the Judge) to his meeting with the `new boy on the block` Lennie Godber. He takes Lennie, on his first stretch of Porrige through the unwritten rules of prison life - but not without looking after his own interests first. All of the characters on this DVD are brilliant. Prison officers and inmates interact with hilarious consequences so the Series never ages.- Was this review helpful to you?

Porridge Series 1
By a customer from Leics , 01 May 2009This is British comedy at its best, comic genius that was the late Ronnie Barker, everything is spot on, the timing, the jokes, the characters its just perfection. Add to that the subject matter and the touching subsitute father/son relationship between Fletch' the seasoned con who treats going to prison as an occupational hazzard and Lenny Godber first time petty crim who is out of his depth, beautifully written and well acted and apart from the very old vehicles featured in the opening credits and some episodes a timeless piece of comedy which has not dated. Excellent!!! Highly recommended.- Was this review helpful to you?
