This shoot-'em-up revisionist Western traces the little-known legend of black cowboys in the Old West, who participated in settling the frontier and played an unrecognised role in U.S. history. During the Spanish-American War, a multi-racial group of U.S. soldiers go on a dangerous mission under the orders of the despicable Colonel Graham, who is white. They succeed, returning with the booty from the battle only to find that Graham has betrayed them. After fighting Graham off, the soldiers escape with their cache. Thus begins a chase through Cuba and back into the U.S. as the group struggles with the law, the Ku Klux Klan, and big business in an effort to protect the land and rights of African American settlers. Directed by and starring Mario Van Peebles, POSSE also features terrific turns by the likes of Tiny Lister, Tone Loc, Pam Grier, Isaac Hayes, Nipsey Russell, Aaron Neville, Stephen Baldwin, Billy Zane, and more.

Mario Van Peebles's ambitious attempt to fuse the spaghetti western with 1990s black consciousness — Cowboyz N the Hood? — doesn't always work, but it remains a provocative and entertaining addition to the revitalised genre. Van Peebles himself plays the mean and moody leader of a disparate group of black soldiers — plus token white good guy Stephen Baldwin — who find themselves caught between a cruel, racist sheriff (Richard Jordan) and their psychopathic old colonel (Billy Zane). Van Peebles's flashy, hyperactive direction is sometimes at odds with the genre — as is some of the dialogue, for that matter — but the amount of gunplay will leave western fans well satisfied. He also succeeds in assembling an astonishingly eclectic cast, which ranges from veteran black actors such as Woody Strode to 1970s icons such as Pam Grier, Isaac Hayes and his own father, Melvin, and is bang up-to-date with rappers such as Tone Loc and Big Daddy Kane. Look out, too, for a rare cameo from Stephen J Cannell, creator of American TV shows such as The A-Team.

On the whole I thought this film was average. Certainly watchable and not disappionting, but nothing special either.
An interesting take on the western genre, but towards the end it felt like they were trying to squeeze too much into the plot.
Also, at times it felt hard to form a connection with any of the characters, they seemed to lack any depth.
Still, worth a look if you like western / action films.
