A nice literary detective tale

I loved the book and I liked the movie... if you enjoy literary stories, enjoy books and poetry, or have the hots for Gwynnie, Aaron Eckhardt or Jeremy Northam, then get this film. The film very neatly switches from the romance of the Victorian poets to the modern-day detective hunt waged by two academics trying to uncover the details of this secret love. Some beautiful scenery too - the locations in Whitby are wonderful.- Was this review helpful to you?

You get two parallel interleaved love story dramas, one in the present day, and one from the Victorian era (about a famous poet and his mistress) that the modern day characters are researching. Touching and pleasant drama although ultimately the period drama strand is a tragedy. Well acted by all.- Was this review helpful to you?

Possession: 'Not Possessed But Certainly Captivated'
By a customer , 27 Jul 2012A charming yet troubled romance in the style of The French Lieutenant's Woman. Both movies are based on novels: that one by the giant John Fowles; this one by AS Byatt. An invented Victorian poet - the actual verse is Brian Patten's - has an affair with an almost equally famous (and fictional) poetess. Borrowing details from the lives of various litterati - including Christina Rosetti, the Brownings, and even Virginia Woolf - the plot is not too much slowed down by the research gone into by a pair of lovestruck academics. The four time-separated lovers - a Byronic Jeremy Northam and an Olivia de Haviland-ish Jennifer Ehle, along with a sulky Aaron Eckhart and cool Gwnyeth Platrow - are skilfully directed through the mixed historical settings, and well supported, especially by the veteran actors who provide comedy and atmosphere- Was this review helpful to you?

Unobtainable Unobtainable!!!

The film has had 'Long Wait' against the title for a very long time now even though it is on BBC 1 tonight (20 June 2012). What are Love Film playing at? Inglorious Basterds is unobtainable for rent and there are several films on my 'rental list' which have had 'Short Wait' against them for over a year! Short wait my a... Hot or Not!
