A theatrical legend, but yet to convince wholly on film, Québecois Robert Lepage makes his English-language debut with this highly stylised slice of cerebral sci-fi. However, this adaptation by John Mighton of his own play is also an identity drama, a whodunnit and a philosophical romance, so it's easy to slip between the strata and lose sight of the complex ideas and intricate scene shifts. Central to the conceit is the murder of Thomas McCamus. But discovering who stole his brain matters less than whether he'll find love — in one of several parallel universes — with the chameleon-like Tilda Swinton. You'll either care passionately or not one jot.
A puzzle of a film that begins promisingly, with the discovery of a corpse without a brain, but then develops into a movie without much sense.
This is a small independent style movie. Which with a largely Canadian cast has created a small gem. It is a film you should ideally see without knowing what the plot is. Because the whole film hinges around ideas and our understanding of them. Letting the superb cast unfold the drama before you is totally compelling. But if you prefer action rather than puzzles and open ended mysteries then give this a miss. Slow and with a truely gripping sense of suspense this film draws you towards the climax with a delicate touch. If you are looking for something a bit different then this is a real find. Also for Tilda Swinton fans worth the time alone to see her play the different versions of the one character. A film for those who like weirdness and puzzles.
The beauty with this movie is that it is not obvious, just like our minds. It slowly reveals itself and explores our inner self in a very subtle manner. It feels so good to see a deep movie without any explosions and gun shootings.
Lepage, one of Quebec's greatest play writers, shows that with very little means, he can get you very far.
