It bears little resemblance to Carrie Fisher's screamingly funny bestselling novel, yet director Mike Nichols's grand tour through “Hollywood Babylon” behaviour and Bel Air-head lifestyles still emerges as a reasonably savage showbiz satire. Meryl Streep plays the selfish actress in celebrity detox who moves back home with her overbearing mother (Shirley MacLaine) in this thinly-veiled account of Fisher's own poignant love-hate relationship with real-life mother Debbie Reynolds. Both stars rise to the bitchy one-liner occasion and turn on the glitz, glamour and grit in an engaging ride on the hypocritical Hollywood highway.

    She was so good in

Wonderful. This is one of the funniest, most touching films I've ever seen. Based on Carrie Fisher's semi-autobiographcal novel, Shirley MacLaine and Meryl Streep turn in fantastic performances as mother and daughter at war. Examining the relationship between fading Hollywood legend MacLean and drug addicted Streep, there are many tragic/comedy moments that have you creased up with laughter one minute and choking back the tears the next.
