Excellent music partly spoilt by the production

This opera tells the story of the Carmelite order of nuns who faced martyrdom during the French Revolution. It is based on the memoirs of Mother Marie who survived the Terror. I already have a dvd of the opera in another version, which I find more satisfactory and in line with the composer's original. There is nothing wrong either with the orchestra or the singers who are excellent. The production however leaves something to be desired. The action starts in the house of the Marquis de la Force, whose daughter wants to join the order of nuns, but there is a distinct lack of scenery. The scene then changes to the convent of the order, and the scenery here looks more like a glorified greenhouse. The final shows the nuns appearing to survive their martyrdum which is different to the version I have. A shame really because Poulenc's music excellently reveals the nuns situation.- Was this review helpful to you?

(2)A "curate's egg" (excellent in parts)
By film-man (16 reviews) , 18 Sep 2012I was fascinated to see and hear this, since I know the opera very well (I took part in two runs of it in the 1960s, one with a young Kiri te Kanawa before her rise to stardom) and more recently I have seen a justly acclaimed production in London by ENO. This one is something of a 'curate's egg' (excellent in parts) very well sung and played (Susan Gritton is a first-rate Blanche), but the producer's 'conception' constantly gets in the way of the music and the plot with intrusive stage 'business' and a ridiculous distortion of the ending. Furthermore, Kent Nagano's dull, plodding tempi tends to weigh everything down. My three-and-a-half stars are for the composer, the singers and the orchestra.- Was this review helpful to you?
