What this film lacks in star quality it makes up for with energy and ideas. Basically it tells many stories from one set of apartments with suitably dramatic courtyard that the narrator looks out on to. Raveena Tandon is there as a name and is not the main star of the film - so don't rent it on her account. However, if you like parodies there are some interesting takes on songs from other films. There are, of course, many stereotypes but they are enjoyable and add to the feeling of zany knockabout fun. It's a bit mad but it won me over and I did appreciate the looser narrative and the fact that for once the film was about real people's lives - I particularly enjoyed the scene in which the occupants of the chawl are waiting for water and then inevitably sing about it. There is also a prodigious amount of beeping out Hindi swear words, which is fun in a sixth form kind of way. This is undemanding but likeable - but do not rent if you are looking for the standard hindi Film.

  • Chawl multistory and entertaining

A group of stories loosely strung together based on the inhabitants of a chawl. The interactions of the people are interesting and entertaining; I particularly liked some flashes of realism with a comic note. Very different from Bollywood melodrama and all the more enjoyable for that.

  • Brilliant satire on Bollywood movies

    Rated - 3.0 stars

This movie shows what happens when a property developer wants to demolish a traditional Indian block of apartments that are built around a courtyard. The inhabitants of the courtyard are all working class people with the usual troubles - lack of money, marital strife....

Stumbled on this movie by mistake and was suprised to see a lot of familiar faces. It is brilliant mockery of a lot of Bollywood movie conventions, so if you aren't very familiar with the famous films you might miss some of the jokes. For instance, in a "commercial break" they rip off the famous Ishq Ishq qawali from black and white favourite "Barsaat ki raat".

Even better, despite the big laughs you get a telling depiction of modern Indian family life, particularly the treatment of women.

    Highly recommended.
