The very quality of the much of the acting, the effective period sets and the use of the camera make this 'difficult film' particularly complex. Set in the 'liberal' New Orleans brothel in 1917, this is contextually a long way from our contemporary environment and modern attitudes. There are scenes which are horrific - the 'auction' of the young girl's virginity, for instance - and some of the nudity is on the edge by contemporary standards - but an interesting range of relationships are explored and the overall effect is sensitively managed to a sad conclusion.- Was this review helpful to you?

(16)It was ok
By lele_poco (46 reviews) from Croydon , 12 Aug 2011I loved the front cover and thought it would be a visually interesting, quirky film. The scene of Brooke holding the doll is actually quite short and nothing as special as Id hoped. I liked the New Orleans setting- but it wouldnt be a film I would watch again.- Was this review helpful to you?

Pretty Baby - very pretty
By a customer , 02 May 2011At first view, this movie didn't come across as anything other than a pedo exercise in watching a very young Brooke Shields. But then, it does grow on you next time round and the story is not as bad as 1st thought.- Was this review helpful to you?

Absolute Stinker
By a customer from Norwich , 18 Feb 2011It is hard to work why some talented actors got involved in such a sordid nasty little film. I am just glad I did not buy as that really would have been a waste of money.
Avoid at all costs (or even at no cost)- Was this review helpful to you?

Great film but not the original version.
By Ebenezer (1 review) from Essex , 07 Feb 2011This is a great film, not in terms of acting, script, etc., maybe, but because it is unlike any other film, and it has lasting impact. The subject matter is controversial and distasteful but it makes you think. It is lovely to watch, and despite the element of exploitation seems to me to be good natured and warm-hearted. Nobody really suffers, except perhaps society's morals. Be warned, though, the version of the film is not as advertised. It is the 124 minute UK release, not the 129 minute US release that is described and pictured. I don't know what has been cut (although I can guess), and I don't know what effect that has on the film, but I for one would prefer to see a film as the director intended, and as it is described.- Was this review helpful to you?
