The Scream on form...

Firstly lets set the context for this review, this is not a review of Primal Scream the band, one assumes that anyone interested in this DVD is fully aware of their material already. If you dont like them then turn away now.
I saw this tour in November 2006 at the Birmingham Academy, its the Riot City Blues tour. Unfortunately of the 10+ times Ive seen them over the past 15 years, it was the worst. However this was more to do with Mannis bass stack exploding during the sound check, accompanied by the worst PA Ive heard them use... probably the venues own.
So I must admit I wasnt holding out a great deal of hope for this DVD, particularly having recently viewed their performance on Hoping for Palestine (charity gig from 2004), not that they were bad its just that the quality of that DVD is somewhat less than betamax.
What a pleasant surprise, the full line-up are on display backing singers et al, Bobbys on top form, and nearly hits all the notes, the rest of the band are really tight and on their best behaviour.
Where this DVD really excels is in the quality of image and sound, the camera work and direction are superb, with a very good quality widescreen picture. As for the sound it must have been taken from the mixing desk, all the instruments/vocals are crystal clear, with both 5.1 and stereo available. My only quibble, and the only reason I didnt give the DVD 5 stars is why no DTS track? Although the 5.1 mix is up there with Talking Heads Stop Making Sense, a good benchmark for music DVDs.
Add to that a compilation of their single videos, and an interview with Bobby and Manni, the lads have set a lead for all other contemporary bands to follow.
This is what a projector and a 5.1 system are for- Was this review helpful to you?

(2)primal scream
By grahamnewlands (15 reviews) from Inverness , 15 Jan 2008An absolutely magnificent concert performance by arguably scotlands greatest ever rock band. Filmed during the riot city blues tour of 2007 the concert is almost a greatest hits complilation featuring tunes from the bands third album screamadelica through to last years riot city blues. Although difficult to capture the sheer energy and excitement of a live scream gig this dvd comes pretty close. As an added bonus the dvd also contains about 20 primal scream videos from the rather dated looking early afforts up to the latest hits, including 'some velvet morning' starring Kate Moss.
If you enjoy Primal Scream you will love this, if your not a fan give it a try and see what you have been missing out on.- Was this review helpful to you?
