Delightful 1970s kitsch
By Butler from Colchester, England , 04 Dec 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
The opening sequence, in which an anonymous debt collector is converted into a pack of sausages, is brilliantly photographed and unforgettable. (OK, it's a bit stomach churning, so look away girls!) Lee Marvin plays the laconic hero straight out of the Clint Eastwood textbook, whilst Gene Hackman makes a suitably nasty villain. Sissy Spacek is absolulty charming and totally unconvincing as the rescued prostitute. If one wants to nit-pick, the dialogue is poor, the plot is non-existent and the soundtrack frequently inaudible. But none of those things seem to matter. The photography is stunning and there is plenty of black humour - 'Was he a good guy?' asks Marvin, staring at the sausages, 'then I suggest you bury them.'
This film is a classy 1970s caper, a triumph of style over substance. Enjoy it, but don't expect greatness.- Was this review helpful to you?

(2)Short and brutal
By a customer from Cheshire, UK , 20 Aug 2007The ever reliable Lee Marvin is asked by his Chicago mobster associates to retrieve $500k from Mary Anne (Hackman) who is running a drugs and prostitution ring from inside a cattle ranch/abbatoir in Kansas. It's every bit as hard-bitten and punchy as you'd expect. From the opening scene in which a Chicago mobster is turned into a string of sausages, to the end where... well, I'll not give anything else away, this is a great little film. Sissy Spacek makes an early and appearance and the luminous Angel Tompkins is a smart mouthed bitch of the highest quality. Warning - this in its way is quite a shocking film. Don't watch it if you're easily offended.- Was this review helpful to you?
